Mesothelioma A Rare Cancer Type

Author:

Ryan Stan
Mesothelioma is a rare but severe cancer type with no cure yet. This disease is caused by the exposure to asbestos (naturally occurring silicate). For a long time asbestos was considered a very usefully material and used accordingly in construction and other industries. The toxicity of this material was discovered in the early 1900s. Today asbestos is a banned material.

The three main mesothelioma types are as follows:

Pleural Mesothelioma -This type affects the lining of the lungs called the pleura, it is one of the most common mesothelioma forms, spreads a little faster than the other types. The associated symptoms are shortness of breath, chest pain and wheezing, dry cough.

Pericardial Mesothelioma -This is a very rare mesothelioma type. This type excludes surgery as treatment, because the cancer affects the pericardium (the fibroserous sac enclosing the heart). The associated symptoms are constant fatigue, palpitations of the heart, chest pain and other heart related problems.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma -This type of masothelioma cancer affects the lining of the abdominal cavity called the peritoneum. The associated symptoms are abdominal pain, build-up of fluid in the abdomen, weight loss, fever, fatigue and anemia.

Other mesothelioma types that occur:
Epithelial Mesothelioma -This type affects the lining of the chest and abdominal cavity.
Biphasic Mesothelioma -This form of mesothelioma cancer is a mixture between sarcomatoid and epithelioid cancer cells.
Cystic Mesothelioma - This is a benign form of peritoneal mesothelioma.
Multicystic Mesothelioma
Liver Mesothelioma -This is a metastatic development of this disease.
Brain Mesothelioma - This is a metastatic development of this disease.
Papillary Mesothelioma
Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma
Adenocarcinoma Mesothelioma
Desmoplastic Mesothelioma
Testicular Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma cancer is difficult to diagnose and to treat as well. The treatment options available now are:

Surgery – during mesothelioma surgery cancer cells are removed, surgery is also used in diagnoses purposes and to see how far the disease is developed.

Radiation – radiation therapy is used usually after surgery.

Chemotherapy – this option is the most common treatment method used mostly after surgery just as radiation therapy.
